On Purpose: Portrait of the Marching Band
As one of the most exciting and visible organizations on campus, the University of Minnesota Marching Band enthusiastically represents the University of Minnesota with pride at home and away. Founded in 1892 as the 29-member University Cadet Band, we’ve grown to a highly selective 330-member ensemble in 2018.
Throughout our long history, the Pride of Minnesota has shaped the U of M student experience. From Goldy Gopher to our school songs and colors, we’ve helped create some of the University’s most distinctive traditions. We perform frequently on campus as well as in communities across Minnesota. These performances, along with consistent national exposure, have established our reputation as one of the finest marching bands in the nation.
We are fortunate to have a strong support system of alumni, volunteers, fans, and donors. Without the backing of individuals from across Minnesota and the country, we would never be able to provide the student experiences—and the University and community services—that we do today. Donor support funds band travel and equipment purchases, offsets student participation costs, supports community outreach, and provides scholarships for hardworking band members. Our donors teach band members about the importance and impacts of philanthropy and inspire students to become involved in their own communities after college.
Jean Holten is a beloved and active member of the Pride of Minnesota community. She attends many band events each year, always sharing a smile and a love for the band. Her financial support has touched hundreds of band members through numerous annual scholarships as well as the sponsorship of many of the band’s new uniforms. We thank Jean for all that she does to help us be the Pride of Minnesota!
