Academics

Our Early Modern and Medieval Studies minors are supported by an interdisciplinary community of scholars and enrich your major field program with solid grounding in the diverse theories and methods of premodern studies.

Why Premodern Studies?

The Center for Premodern Studies (CPS) at the University of Minnesota has been and continues to be home to some of the best-known scholars in medieval studies. We regularly host researchers from across the globe and have an active schedule of conferences, symposia, and other events.

Students study the history and cultures of the Middle Ages, and they learn languages such as Arabic, Old Norse, Latin, Spanish, French, and/or German, in order to enhance their understanding of this period.

The University Libraries has a collection of medieval manuscripts and other resources, accessible to all University students. In addition, we have long-standing relationships with local Minnesota institutions such as the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Open Book, the Hill Monastic Library at St John’s University in St. Cloud, and the Newberry Library in Chicago.

Undergraduate & Graduate Minors

We support an undergraduate minor in Medieval Studies and graduate minors in Early Modern Studies and Medieval Studies. The Medieval Studies minor is an interdisciplinary program that allows students to supplement their major field program by taking classes in different departments and centers. Upon graduation, students receive formal certification of their cross-disciplinary training as part of a recognized university minor.
