Our medievalist colleague, Professor Bernard (Bernie) Bachrach (History), passed away in the summer of 2023. Professor Bachrach was an expert in medieval military history and an affiliate of the Center of Medieval Studies from its earliest days. He began teaching at the University of Minnesota in 1967 and retired in 2020. Bachrach was a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America. He was a founder of De Re Militari: the Society of Medieval Military History and a co-founding editor of its journal, the Journal of Medieval Military History.  He also was a co-founder of the journal Medieval Prosopography.  Bachrach's publications include Early Carolingian Warfare:  Prelude to Empire (University of Pennsylvania 2011) and Fulk Nerra: The Neo-Roman Consul, 980-1047 (University of California 1993) among many other books and articles.

A festschrift: The Medieval Way of War: Studies in Medieval Military History in Honor of Bernard S. Bachrach was edited by Gregory Halfond and published by Ashgate in 2015.

Many colleagues have expressed an interest in supporting the legacy of Bernie's scholarship and commitment to Medieval Studies at the University of Minnesota. We are pleased to announce that the Center for Premodern Studies is now collecting contributions designated in Bernie's honor through our Medieval Studies Fund. These designated funds will support an award in Medieval Studies and Military History.
