Dissertation Writing Retreat

Announcement and Call for Applications
March 7-10, 2022

The RIDGS (Race, Indigeneity, Disability, Gender, and Sexuality) Studies Center is hosting a writing retreat for dissertation writers for one week of concentrated writing time. We encourage applications from UMN dissertation writers who are broadly engaged with and/or committed to addressing in their research some of the most pressing socio-economic issues and inequalities of our time.

Applications are due by 12:00 PM on Friday, February 25, 2022. We will notify students of their status by Tuesday, March 1 2022. Dissertation writers need to submit the following:

  1. Graduate Student Signed Application Form, which you can download and sign.
  2. Advisor and DGS Signed Form, which you can download and have your Advisor and DGS sign.
  3. Application, which consists of the following items:
    1. Dissertation Abstract: 1 single-spaced page dissertation summary
    2. Plan for Retreat: 500-word description detailing which part of your dissertation you will focus on during the retreat
    3. Optional Feedback from Past Retreats

More detailed instructions are found on the Graduate Student Signed Application Form.

Retreat Description

The writing retreat will be virtual this year, held on Zoom from Monday, March 7, 2022 to Thursday, March 10, 2022 9:00 AM-4:30 PM. We will have warm-up activities and writing prompts to facilitate writing. And, during each lunch, we will have faculty-led discussion on a particular writing topic and/or challenge.

Retreat Expectations

  • Attend the retreat for the entire week
  • Avoid the internet or email during the hours of the retreat
  • Acutely focus on writing your dissertations with sustained writing time
  • Actively participate in writing warm-ups and facilitations
For questions, please email ridgs@umn.edu.
Note: The Writing Center offers an excellent Dissertation Writing Retreat in May Term. RIDGS encourages all students to apply to that more extensive program, which is an intensive three-week retreat with expert writing support. Although they can only accept a limited number of participants, it is a wonderful model, and this RIDGS writing retreat has been inspired by that successful paradigm.
