Welcome New Graduate Students!
The PhD program in Hispanic & Lusophone Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics is proud to welcome five new graduate students this year.
Jacob graduated with a BA in Spanish & Portuguese Studies from the University of Minnesota this spring. He is interested in Lusophone music - especially how it intersects with gender and capitalism. A musician himself, he plays the trumpet and enjoys discovering new music. He will be travelling to Mozambique this spring as a Fulbright Scholar.
Sara’s research interests center around the culinary heritage and cultural identity of Sephardic Jews in Medieval Iberia. She holds a BA in International Literary and Visual Studies from Tufts University and was a Fulbright Scholar in Madrid from 2016-17. A published cookbook author, she enjoys cooking, baking sourdough, tennis, knitting, and visiting museums.
Raegeom just moved to Minneapolis from South Korea where she received her Master’s degree in Spanish from Dankook University near Seoul. She is interested in Second Language Acquisition - specifically on teaching Spanish to speakers of Korean. Her research also includes the use of irony as a teaching tool.
Thiago comes to us from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Brazil where he focused his Master’s thesis on the confrontation of “barbaric” otherness of distant cultures with the poetic and rhetorical thinking of Europe in the seventeenth century. His primary research interests include Latin American literatures and cultures, early modern studies, neoclassicism, aesthetics, literary theory, and political philosophy. His favorite book is Grande Sertão: Veredas by João Guimarães Rosa. He will begin Spring 2021.
Carlos holds a BA in Anthropology from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua. He is interested in 20th and 21st century Central American literature and testimony as well as social and revolutionary movements in Central America, family narratives, and colonialism and decoloniality. He likes to play soccer (he’s a goalkeeper) and his favorite author is Lizandro Chávez Alfaro. He will begin Spring 2021.
