Dr. Catherine Grimm is an Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education and Clinical Experiences Coordinator at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Prior to her appointment at UMN-TC, Dr. Grimm worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Minnesota Duluth instructing music education classes and as a student conductor with the choral ensembles including University Singers, Concert Chorale, and the vocal jazz ensembles Lake Effect and Chill Factor. Additionally, Grimm spent time in the Twin Cities metro area schools as a Graduate Assistant and University Supervisor at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, working with cooperating teachers and teacher candidates.
Prior to her graduate studies, Grimm taught as a K-6 elementary music specialist at Avon Elementary for three years, and two years as a 5-8 grade choral director at Duluth Edison Charter Schools North Star Academy, along with being an instructor for Lake Superior Youth Chorus' Prelude program. During this time, she also became a certified instructor for the Kodály Method through the Kodály Institute at the University of St. Thomas. Addtionally, Grimm returned to the classroom as the director of choirs at Superior Middle School between her Master's and Ph.D. work.
As a vocalist, Grimm has performed as a member and soprano soloist of the Great River Chorale in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and Arrowhead Chorale in Duluth, MN. In the community, she has collaborated with the First Lutheran Choir and Covenant Church as the soprano soloist in Theodore Dubuois' The Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ in 2018. Additionally, she led monthly community folk music sings in conjunction with the Duluth Folk School.
An lifelong learner and researcher, her interests include empowerment and belonging in treble choral ensembles, wellbeing for musicians, and the collaborative choral model. Catherine has presented her findings at the numerous conventions around the globe. Her research on adolescent female mental health and collaborative choir was be published in the Choral Journal research review later this year.
