Tree blossoms

The Asian American Studies Program supports the academic endeavors of graduate students through our Asian American/diaspora graduate student group. The cohort convenes regularly to discuss their research, share ideas, and build a network of support for Asian American/diaspora scholars. The group looks to center the interdisciplinary field of Asian American studies by reading scholarship from within the field and building a community within a larger university. Our graduate students come from various departments such as english, American studies, history, and more.

Awards & Scholarships

When possible, the Asian American Studies Program awards a limited number of travel awards for graduate students presenting papers at Asian American studies-centered conferences (such as the annual meeting of the Association for Asian American Studies and the Critical Ethnic Studies Association) or for research relating to dissertation projects. Preference will be given to PhD students whose papers or projects represent ongoing and sustained research in Asian American studies, who do not have another source of travel support for this conference or research project, and who have not received an AAS Travel Grant in previous years. We provide only one award per person, per fiscal year.

Applications must be submitted to Rich Lee at richlee@umn.edu no less than two weeks prior to the first day of travel or research and before one of the four annual deadlines: Nov 1, Feb 1, May 1, and Aug 1. Payments will be processed shortly after each deadline. Late applications will not be accepted.

Successful grantees will be awarded the full amount and applied directly to their student account. To receive information about our opportunities and events, please join our email list by contacting aast@umn.edu.
