We are delighted to share that Jane King Hession’s book Elizabeth Scheu Close: A Life in Modern Architecture (University of Minnesota Press, 2020) has been nominated for a Minnesota Book Award! We couldn’t be happier to see this wonderful book recognized with such a nomination. Earlier this year, Hession sat down with CAS to discuss the work in more detail, and you can watch that interview on our YouTube channel.

Hession’s book is an in-depth account of the life and career of Minnesota’s first modern architect. One of few women who were practicing architects in the mid-twentieth century, Elizabeth “Lisl” Scheu Close left an indelible mark on Minnesota’s built landscape. This personal and professional biography also explores multiple aspects of modern architecture, including the use of new materials and technologies, the design of prefabricated houses, and the relationship between residential design and changing American lifestyles.

The Minnesota Book Awards will be announced on April 29th, and you can register to watch the virtual (and free) event here.

Good luck, Jane!
