Our faculty and students address global challenges through research grounded in an extensive knowledge of societies and cultures around the world—research that has a far-reaching and significant impact abroad and at home. 

• CLA’s Immigration History Research Center has one of the world’s largest and best collections of materials documenting US immigrant and refugee life. The center is an crucial resource in transforming our understanding of immigration, past and present.
  
   
• In 1989, the CLA Government of Finland/David and Nancy Speer (GOF/DANS) Visiting Professorship was created to stimulate interest in Finland; to raise awareness of unique and important Finnish contributions in cultural, political, and social spheres; and to establish new networks between scholars in Finland and the United States.
