PLEASE NOTE THE NEW DATE FOR THIS EVENT! This event will now be held on Wednesday, October 9.
Join the Human Rights Program and author and UMN Associate Professor of English V. V. Ganeshananthan for a conversation about her acclaimed book, Brotherless Night, which follows 16-year-old Sashi as her life and her dream to become a doctor get turned around in the Sri Lankan Civil War. The book has recently been recognized with the 2024 Women's Prize for Fiction and the 2024 Carol Shields Prize for Fiction.
The conversation will center around the human rights themes featured in the book, which explores the civil war in Sri Lanka between government authorities and the Tamil Tigers. The discussion will also include the role of literature as a form of human rights education and advocacy.
The event is open to the public, and the first 50 UMN students who RSVP in advance will receive a copy of the book at the event. Light refreshments will be served. RSVP here.
This event is co-sponsored by the Institute for Global Studies.
