Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Collaborative Piano and Coaching

Our DMA in Collaborate Piano and Coaching trains students to be competitive partners for singers and instrumentalists in performance, with broad knowledge of vocal and instrumental repertoire. Students are also trained in analytical skills and history of music and have a high caliber in interpreting text musically. Our students have an appreciation of the evolution of collaborative pianism and vocal coaching, including customs and traditions of the profession, history of academic programs, significant developments in pedagogy, and current state of the art.

Apply and audition

For your DMA, you will be expected to meet the following requirements:

  • 32 credits of applied study
  • 9 credits of emphasis courses, including keyboard skills, repertoire knowledge and accompaniment skills
  • 10 credits of music theory and musicology/ethnomusicology courses
  • 3 credits of research skills
  • 20 credits of a combination of recitals (and courses, for flexible recital credit option)
  • Completion of written and oral preliminary exam
  • Completion of thesis or final project
  • Completion of final oral examination
