Learn More About Joining a School of Music Ensemble
Students in University Wind Ensemble play flute.

All UMN - TC students, regardless of major, are invited to add a School of Music ensemble to their schedule! From the auditioned ensembles to the non-auditioned ensembles, there is a group for everyone interested in making music and forming a community with others who also share a passion for performing. SoM ensembles are open to all students throughout the university, and some groups require an audition in order to register for the course.

Students with a strong background in orchestral, choral, or wind ensembles are invited to audition for our top groups, including the University Singers, Women’s Chorus, University Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, University Symphony Orchestra, University Philharmonic Orchestra, Jazz Big Bands, and Jazz Combos. Audition sign-ups for these groups end Friday, August 23.

For students who desire a more flexible schedule, the campus ensembles offer non-auditioned experiences that provide a fulfilling challenge and enhanced community with fellow musicians from majors across campus. These groups include Campus Bands, Gospel Choir, Campus Singers, Campus Orchestras, World Music Ensemble, and West African Music Ensemble. To join these ensembles, register for the course and attend the first class meeting.

Music ensembles provide an outlet for creativity and fun during the week. Trumpet player Rori Curti, a Retail Merchandising major with a minor in Interdisciplinary Design, shares that participating in ensembles is a “fun way to decompress from school and play good music.” Curti performs with the North Star Campus Band, one of three non-auditioned campus band sections including the Maroon Campus Band and Gold Campus Band.

One of the best aspects of participating in a School of Music ensemble is the opportunity to perform in the School of Music’s beautiful Ted Mann Concert Hall. The state-of-the-art theater is well known for its specially-designed acoustics and plays an important role in the local arts scene.
