The University of Minnesota Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Prof. Fernando Meza, presents a program of contemporary percussion chamber works and joins forces with musical guests: Ensamble de Marimbas y Percusión de Santa Cruz, Guanacaste (Pre-University Program of the University of Costa Rica), prior to their performance at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis, and Bato-Bato from Breck School.
The marimba is the national instrument of Costa Rica and the city of Santa Cruz, in the northern province of Guanacaste, is considered its birthplace. The ensemble joining us represents the very best that Costa Rica has to offer in terms of their traditional music. Besides being a showcase of beautiful music, this concert will also be an opportunity to share with the members of ensemble Bato-Bato from Breck School who will also participate with their Zimbabwean marimba group, under the direction of U of M alum David Birrow. Join us for a great evening of marimba and percussion music!
