Happy Pride Month! This month is a time to celebrate and remember gay liberation during the Stonewall riots and to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer pride. Meet the New Deinard Chair in Jewish History, Dr. Noam Sienna
The Department of History and the Center for Jewish Studies are excited to announce that Dr. Noam Sienna (PhD '20, history) will join the University of Minnesota in fall 2026 as the new Amos S. Deinard Chair in Jewish History.
His first book, "Jewish Books in North Africa: Between the Early Modern and Modern Worlds" (Indiana, 2025), won the Jordan Schnitzer First Book Publication Award from the Association for Jewish Studies, and the 2025 Book Award from the Middle East Librarians Association.
Sienna earlier undertook the compilation of a groundbreaking collection of translated sources for Jewish LGBTQ history, "A Rainbow Thread: An Anthology of Queer Jewish Texts from the First Century to 1969" (Philadelphia, 2019), which won both the Anthology Prize of the Lambda Literary Foundation and the Reference Award from the Association of Jewish Libraries.
Remembering Jesús Estrada-Pérez
Celebrating the legacy of scholar and activist Jesús Estrada-Pérez, this fund provides fellowships for graduate students whose work engages some aspect of queer Latinx artistic production, cultural studies, social justice issues, and related interdisciplinary theories.
"Ever heard about Heated Rivalry?"
Lecturer Irina Zaykovskay (German, Nordic, Slavic & Dutch) discusses the popular show's use of the Russian language and Russian names, and also reveals an interesting, perhaps unintentional, connection between one of the main character's names and a controversial Russian philosopher.

Spotlight on Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies
CLA’s Department of Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies (GWSS) promotes feminist scholarship, teaching, and programming that centers on the relationship between knowledge, power, and social justice. We push against established boundaries while providing a rich and rigorous education that asks students to view the world around them with a curious yet critical lens.
The department offers an undergraduate major and minor in GWSS, an undergraduate minor in GLBT studies, a doctoral degree in feminist studies, and a graduate minor in feminist and critical sexuality studies.
Graduate Minor in Race, Indigeneity, Disability, Gender & Sexuality Studies
This graduate minor, offered through the Center for Race, Indigeneity, Disability, Gender & Sexuality Studies (RIDGS), provides graduate students with a critical, interdisciplinary framework for analyzing how categories like race, indigeneity, gender, and disability intersect and shape systems of power and inequality.
