Research Interests
Children must learn correspondences between social and linguistic contrasts to eventually achieve adult-like competence in associating language behaviors with other cues to group membership. Because social knowledge shapes linguistic expectations, diversity in experience may significantly impact measures of language knowledge and ability, both in adults and in children. My work explores how differences in person perception and language experience impact psycholinguistic processing throughout the lifespan. Assessments that incorporate sociolinguistic knowledge may help moderate bias found in current standardized measures.
