Cultivating Learning as a CLA Content Creator

Headshot of Jennifer Nguyen

A budding sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA), Jennifer Nguyen remarks that what makes liberal arts more fascinating and important than any other stream to them is the way it broadens their horizons and teaches them to see the world through a more accepting lens. Being a student of Vietnamese descent, they feel this is especially important in a place like Minnesota where the population is predominantly white. “To me, liberal arts education means things like accessibility, diversity, and learning about the communities around you,” Jennifer says. “It’s about using the skills that you have, like English, the arts, and all that stuff to expand your world and other people's worlds as well.”

Jennifer is an English major and feels a strong connection towards the subject. They are also deciding on taking up computer science as a minor. They believe it is something extremely useful to learn, especially in light of the rapid technological evolution that began decades ago and will continue into the future. Although Jennifer enjoys being involved on campus and attending different cultural events, they value their personal time even more. After a long day of classes and activities, Jennifer relaxes by taking out their sketchbook and getting lost in a world of pencil sketches. Releasing their artistic expression on paper is Jennifer’s favorite practice of self-care.

Jennifer applied to be a content creator for CLA’s Office of Institutional Advancement because they are skilled at writing and enjoy it. They also want to gain more experience in the field. “This job is really nice because it’s a really good opportunity for networking and connecting with the U of M community, especially since we didn’t get the chance to do that last year because of COVID-19,” Jennifer reflects. As a CLA undergraduate student, Jennifer’s goals are to become a more professional writer by developing their writing skills. They also want to meet people who specialize in different subjects like science, finance, history, etc. and learn more about those fields. They are able to cultivate that learning as a content creator. Needless to say, Jennifer is loving their job.
