Ming Li Tchou Scholarship
The Ming Li Tchou Scholarship supports students in the Departments of History and Asian & Middle Eastern Studies who are interested in pursuing a degree focused on China studies. The Scholarship was established to help students deepen their understanding of China and encourage them to engage in the ongoing work of dialogue and mutual understanding in U.S.-China relations. Scholarships are awarded once every Spring and Fall Semester.
How to Apply
If you are an AMES major who has taken two or more AMES-designator classes related to China, you may apply.
To Apply:
- Submit an unofficial transcript and contact information.
- Submit a one-page statement (PDF) about why you chose to study China and how the study of China supports your long term goals.
- Send applications to [email protected] with "Ming Li Tchou Scholarship" in the heading.
The next application deadline will be in the Fall 2025 semester.

Past Recipients
Isabel Metzdorff won the Spring 2025 Ming Li Tchou Scholarship. Isabel is double majoring in Public Health and Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, focusing on the Chinese sub-plan. Isabel's goal is to pursue a master's degree in either Environmental Public Health or Global Health. Ultimately, she aspires to work for the World Health Organization, where fluency in Chinese and cross-cultural proficiency are crucial for impacting public health.
John Bounds was awarded the Fall 2024 Ming Li Tchou Scholarship. John is triple majoring in Computer Science, Chinese, and Russian. He is interested in the history and politics of China and Russia, and how actions of the past impact our world today. John looks forward to combining his interests in his future career.
Libby Nemitz won the Spring 2024 Ming Li Tchou Scholarship. Libby is an Asian and Middle Eastern Studies student, focusing on Chinese Studies. Libby's goal is to attend graduate school in China as she works towards a career in international relations. As a China scholar, she hopes to gain the necessary cultural competency and historical perspectives that would allow her to work to build bridges between her home and birth countries.
Yulong Yang won the Spring 2023 Ming Li Tchou Scholarship. Double majoring in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and History, Yulong plans to follow an academic career path in pre-modern Chinese history and literature. He is especially interested in the period from 300 BCE to 700 CE.
Joli Lacy was awarded the Fall 2022 Ming Li Tchou Scholarship. She is triple majoring in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies with a focus in Chinese, Marketing, and International Business. Using her Mandarin Chinese skills, Joli looks forward to working in international business.
Caecie Deblaere won the Spring 2022 Ming Li Tchou Scholarship. Double majoring in Graphic Design and Chinese Studies, Caecie will be attending the CET Taiwan study abroad program this summer and aspires to work internationally upon graduation.
Meg Hellerud won the Ming Li Tchou Scholarship during Fall 2021. She is majoring in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies with a focus in Chinese and is also Pre-Law. Using both degrees, Meg hopes to become an immigration lawyer who specializes in immigration to and from China and the US.
Zoe Rudd won the Ming Li Tchou Scholarship in Spring 2021. She is majoring in both Computer Science and Asian and Middle Eastern Studies with a focus in Chinese. Using both degrees, Zoe intends to follow technological innovations in China and America and be involved in the computer science industry of both countries.
Kate Hein was awarded the Ming Li Tchou Scholarship in Fall 2020. She is a University Honors student majoring in Global Studies with minors in Chinese and Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Kate fosters intercultural relationships through her work with TandemPlus student association, a program on campus that pairs students with language exchange partners, and the National Security Language Initiative for Youth. After graduating, Kate intends to serve in the United States Foreign Service.
Sophia Vedvik won the Spring 2020 Ming Li Tchou Scholarship. She is a University Honors student majoring in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics with a minor in Chinese. She intends to utilize her study in the Chinese language within a future Aerospace Engineering career. Her language skills will be put to use seeking collaborations between our two nations' growing Aerospace industries
