McNair Scholars

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese highly encourages current and past McNair Scholars to contact us for more information on our Graduate Program. We’d love to meet with you either during the Summer Visitation Program (info below), an Online Info Session, or a separate campus visit.

Hear from Hispanic Literatures & Cultures PhD candidate Magaly Ortiz Acupiña on her McNair experience:

The Admissions and Diversity Offices invite McNair Scholars to our Summer McNair Visitation Program, held once a month in June, July, and August. Programming consists of a presentation on the graduate admissions process, opportunities to meet with faculty and staff from your programs of interest, and a staff-led tour of the Minneapolis campus. More than 225 McNair Scholars attend these events each summer.

Please visit the McNair Scholars Resources page on the Graduate School website for more information on funding and opportunities.

Named in honor of Dr. Ronald E. McNair, one of the astronauts who perished with the Challenger mission, this Federal TRIO Program for U.S. Citizens and permanent residents assists eligible first-generation undergraduate students from low-income families to prepare for and enter graduate and Ph.D. programs. Participants of the McNair Scholars Program include academically talented, low-income, first-generation students, and students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in graduate programs.
