Melissa “Missy” Drew is a PhD candidate in German Studies with a minor in Feminist and Critical Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota. Drew’s research interests include 20th and 21st century German media, queer space, transnational feminist theory, Black feminist theory, and coalition and community building. Drew’s current dissertation project revolves around the artist Tom of Finland and how his work influenced queer spaces in Germany and the United States. These spaces, primarily bars and motorcycle clubs, have examples of Tom’s influence in their physical spaces as well as their advertisements and literature. Her minor in Feminist and Critical Sexuality Studies has been indispensable in providing a critical and curious insight into the power structures of oppression, which helps guide her research. Drew believes in the power of people and collective action and seeks to include social justice and cross-cultural communication within her teaching and research.
