Stephan Knott is a PhD candidate at the University of Minnesota. He is particularly interested in narratives, mentalities, the imaginary, and everything nineteenth-century scholars would have called “legends”. His work explores the intersection of history and literature, driven by the question of how narrative sources relate to social reality and how they open new ways to see the past. His dissertation, titled “Debating the Fourth Crusade: Narratives, Social Conflict, and Imagining a Whole New World in Frankish Greece" provides a revisionist interpretation of the earliest prose histories written in French, the chronicles of the Fourth Crusade (1202-04).
