Jake Rudy (he/him/his) is thrilled to be joining the Department of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies as its undergraduate academic advisor. Jake is in his third year as an academic advisor in the College of Liberal Arts and his sixth year as an advisor on campus. He earned a Master's degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Kansas and a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and Political Science from the University of Northern Iowa.
Jake approaches advising as an act of radical love—centering the individual human needs of each student as they navigate (and deconstruct) institutions. Some of his academic interests include: promoting honest and holistic wellbeing for students, improving advisor retention in the profession, and understanding how (pop) cultural consumption influences the experiences of college students and the advising partnership. He is an active member of NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising, serving on the regional steering committee and was recently selected as one of ten Emerging Leaders in the association. He has presented locally, regionally, and nationally on topics ranging from "the Millennial employee" to "pre-emptive parallel planning for STEM majors". On campus, he has previously served as a co-chair for Pride@Work and the Academic Advising Network, and currently co-facilitates a New Advisors Group focused on professional/social onboarding for new academic advisors in every college.
When he isn't working in either Ford or Johnston Hall, you can probably find Jake at his neighborhood library or coffee shop (cold brew, 2 sugars), or taking long walks to catch up on the podcasts he's behind on. His personal interests include bad tv, good tv, the history of the American musical, and exploring local museums & breweries (often in the same day).
Jake will be available in-person from 8:30am to 10am and 3:30pm to 4:30pm each day. After the beginning of the semester, Jake will generally be in Ford 404 on Tuesday afternoons (12pm to 4:30pm) and on Thursdays (8:30am to 4:30pm), unless otherwise noted.
You can always contact him at email@example.com with any questions, or if you need to individually schedule something outside of those times.
