Call, email, or use our new online scheduler to make an appointment!

Jean Merrill (she/her) is delighted to join the Department of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies as its undergraduate academic advisor. Jean started as an academic advisor in the College of Liberal Arts in 2015. A Minnesota native, Jean earned her MA and PhD in English literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, but please don't hold that against her.
Prior to coming to the U, Jean was an English professor in small-town Iowa, and she's really glad to be back in the Big City. Academic advising features much of what she loved about teaching in that environment (building relationships with students!) without the part she didn't love (grading!). Jean is grateful to work at an institution that has so many resources to support students and genuinely enjoys helping students navigate the university. And if any GWSS students are looking to nerd out by talking about Shakespeare, feel free to ask for her opinions.
When she's not working in Johnston, Ford, or at home, Jean can be found chasing her kid (e's fast!) or curling up on the couch with her very sweet, very dim, little old-man cat, Benny. She loves reading, pop culture, dance music, cooking, travel, yoga, and fighting the power.
Declared GWSS majors and minors can book appointments with Jean by using the online scheduler linked above.
Students may also call the Johnston front desk at 612-625-2020 or email to set up a major or minor declaration, or schedule an appointment by talking to a human.
