Divided memory in a divided Germany

Once a Nazi concentration camp and then a post-war youth correctional facility, Neuengamme outside of Hamburg is now a memorial site and museum. Sections from the postwar prison wall feature educational plaques that explain the multilayered history of the site.
Dr. Fischer has published a reflection on memorialization in a country divided after her recent visit to the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum, in preparation for an undergraduate course with integrated travel to the region.
