CourseShare for Fall 2020: Even more languages available!

Options for University of Minnesota students to learn the languages of the world continue to grow!

With the help of university academic language and culture departments, who have helped advertise options to students, there are now even more CourseShare options for Fall 2020. Newly scheduled classes include Advanced Vietnamese and Beginning Hungarian. Beginning Ukrainian and Sanskrit are in process, and should be available for registration soon. These newly added language classes, like all received CourseShare courses are offered exclusively online.

The most exciting development in CourseShare though, is not the languages the University of Minnesota is receiving in the Big Ten, it’s the languages we are sending. The number of less commonly taught languages we are sharing with other institutions continues to grow, as does the number of receiving sites. Because almost all of these courses shared are entirely online, one class can be shared with students at multiple universities. As just a couple of examples, Beginning Urdu is being shared with the universities of Maryland and Iowa, as well as Ohio State University, and Beginning Norwegian is being shared with Maryland, Iowa and Michigan State University.

University of Minnesota less commonly taught language instructors’ outreach and generosity are helping to develop our institution’s reputation as an academic home for a variety of languages offered in the departments of American Indian, Asian and Middle Eastern, Classical and Near Eastern, and German, Nordic, Slavic and Dutch. Because new connections are currently under discussion, a comprehensive list of the instructors sharing their languages will be available later this summer.
