Program Overview

Our professional master of geographic information science (MGIS) degree program provides graduate-level work in the theory, applications, and technology of geographic information science (GIS). Courses for the program are divided into three broad categories: required courses, elective courses, and outside courses. Required courses provide the conceptual and theoretical underpinnings for a comprehensive, well-rounded knowledge of GIS, including an introductory seminar for entering students (GIS 8501), elective courses allow students to focus on technical or conceptual courses that match their geospatial interests, and outside courses provide additional breadth to the program by allowing students to take courses related to their area of interest.

The MGIS program at the University of Minnesota offers you the flexibility of being a part- or full-time student. Many MGIS students work full-time and complete their degrees as part-time students. On a full-time student schedule, the degree takes two years to complete. As a part-time student, completion times vary depending on the number of courses taken each term.

Tuition information is available via One Stop under the heading "Master of Geographic Information Science." The tuition you will pay depends on your residential status and if you are a part- or full-time student. Some students have their tuition paid in part or in full by their employers, while other students are very successful at finding on- and off-campus opportunities such as research or teaching assistantships. Completing Minors in Other Programs

Depending on their interests and career goals, MGIS students can choose to earn a designated minor in a related field such as computer science, water resources, or planning.
