Congratulations to Professor Ann Hill Duin!

The Department of Writing Studies is pleased to announce that Professor Ann Hill Duin has received the 2018-2019 Award for Outstanding Contributions to Graduate and Professional Education at the University of Minnesota. This honor is awarded to exceptional candidates nominated by colleges in their quest to identify excellence in graduate and professional education. Those who receive the Graduate and Professional Teaching Award become members of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers (ADT). The title "Distinguished University Teaching Professor" or “Distinguished University Teacher” is conferred upon recipients. Each winner will also receive a one-time $15,000 award. This award reflects the University’s strong and enduring commitment to quality graduate and professional education at the University of Minnesota.

For over three decades, Professor Duin has been a pioneer in the field of rhetoric, writing studies, and technical communication. Her cutting-edge research explores emerging technologies; she has studied “once new” technologies such as integration of word processing for personal computers, computer-based lab writing classrooms, development of online courses and program curricula, and more recently, exploration of “wearables” technology including augmented and virtual reality. Indeed, Professor Duin has published 100 articles and has been an invited speaker over 70 times. She also is an active international researcher; for example, she has recently been invited to collaborate with the Fabric of Digital Life archive at the Decimal Research Institute at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology for a current project she is pursuing on the changing nature of digital literacies.

Professor Duin has provided long-standing leadership to all of our graduate programs: the MS program in Scientific and Technical Communication, Graduate Certificate in Technical Communication, and MA and PhD graduate programs in Rhetoric and Scientific and Technical Communication. She has taught 15 different graduate courses, often inviting national and international experts as guests and/or collaborators. Recently she has served as Director of the MS and Certificate programs and has been a strong advocate for moving these programs to a fully online format to address the needs of students. Professor Duin also prioritizes collaboration with graduate students--she has written 15 publications collaboratively with graduate students. Six of those publications occurred in the context of a research group Professor Duin created in 2014 called the Wearables Research Collaboratory (WRC), now the Emerging Technologies Research Collaboratory (ETRC). This voluntary group of students and faculty conducts research on wearable technologies such as Google Glass, fitness watches, and virtual/augmented reality, and students work in collaboration to publish articles and attend conferences based on their projects.

Professor Duin's excellent teaching, curricular innovations, collaborative research, and outstanding advising and mentoring make her an exceptional candidate for this award. Congratulations!
