This coming Fall semester, GCC 3026 students will again be going out to Murray Middle School to build semester-long relationships with 7th and 8th graders as they learn how to be independent scientific investigators! As we work alongside the young learners, we will question our assumptions about what it means to be "a scientist" and we will study the factors that push students toward and pull students away from participation in academics. For more information, read this article about a student's experience last year.

GCC 3026 meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 pm- 4:15 pm

5. CSPH Nature-Based Therapeutics Courses

How does your environment affect your overall wellbeing? Did you know that being in nature not only reduces stress but can also boost immune activity? Additionally, a growing number of researchers and human service professionals believe that many issues facing people today - issues that include depression, anxiety, and stress - are due, in part, to our separation from nature. Nature-Based Therapeutics, or NBT, focuses on the healing power of nature through interactions with plants, animals and natural landscapes. Through research, courses, and products, the Earl E. Bakken Center for Spirituality & Healing is working to advance this emerging field. If interested in learning more, check out these upcoming courses for Summer and Fall 2019:

CSPH 5642 - Nature Heals: An Introduction to Nature-Based Therapeutics, 3 credits, offered in Fall and Spring.
CSPH 5643 - Horse as Teacher: Equine-Assisted Activities & Therapies (EAAT), 3 credits, offered in Fall.

Please see here the full list of Nature-Based Therapeutics courses online. Or reach out to Christine if you have further questions at csh-academics@umn.edu.

16. Summer Internship - AshaUSA

Just like many communities, South Asians underestimate the importance of mental health and its impact on physical health and wellbeing in all areas of life. For South Asians in particular, the expectations in education, career and family life can be exceedingly high. South Asians tend to internalize their stress and emotional problems, minimizing the intensity of what they are experiencing or having physical symptoms that are indirect expressions of the stress. Acknowledging the mental health symptoms and explaining them to the people who care, will likely bring great relief. Major hurdles in preventing South Asians from seeking Mental Health help are the stigma associated with mental health, myths and stereotypes about causes, treatment and care of mental health problems. AshaUSA is seeking to hire 2 students interested in mental health. Interested applicants should send their resume/CV and a brief (1-2 paragraphs) letter of interest to apply ashausa2014@gmail.com.
