Welcome Amy Lee!

The Department of Writing Studies is very pleased to announce that Professor Amy Lee will be joining our faculty in fall 2019. Professor Lee brings several years of leadership experience and will serve as director of First-Year Writing starting in summer 2019. During the 2018-2019 academic year, Lee will attend department events and meetings as her time allows to become more familiar with Writing Studies. We look forward to welcoming Professor Amy Lee!

Lee is currently a professor in the Culture and Teaching Program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Minnesota. Her PhD is in English/Writing Studies from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. She is inspired by Gloria Anzaldúa’s call to “do work that matters” and Gloria Ladson-Billings’ reminder that teaching is always “unfinished business.” Lee’s career has focused on improving the capacity of undergraduate programs, instructors, and curriculum to meaningfully engage diverse students, to value diversity, and to promote access and equity.

Since 2012, Lee has published four books (two authored and two edited volumes) on critical intercultural pedagogy. Her books and articles prior to 2012 focused on critical pedagogy and first-year writing. She has served in leadership roles in writing programs at three public research universities, and she was a department chair and directed an undergraduate major in writing studies. Amy’s undergraduate teaching includes basic writing, first-year writing, research writing, multicultural and U.S. literature courses. At the graduate level, Amy has taught doctoral seminars in composition theory, critical pedagogy, and research on teaching; thesis and dissertation workshops; and teaching practicum for writing and literature teachers.

Lee has provided leadership and consulted on multiple initiatives aimed at institutional change and faculty development that promotes inclusive, intercultural learning environments and classrooms where faculty and students can engage diversity meaningfully and disrupt deficit-based approaches to diversity/equity/inclusion. Lee has received awards for teaching from three universities, including University of Minnesota Morse-Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor award.
