2024 Summer Research Fellowships Available to UMN Students

CAS Summer Fellowships for 2024

The Center for Austrian Studies will award two fellowships, each in the amount of $5,000, for use in Summer 2024.

CAS Graduate Research Fellowship:

The CAS Graduate Research Fellowship provides financial support to currently enrolled University of Minnesota PhD students to further their progress towards degree completion. 

Eligibility

Applicants must be fully matriculated UMN graduate students who specialize in Austrian or Central European Studies. Applications from all disciplines are welcome, and research projects focusing on the medieval, early modern, and/or modern periods are eligible for the award. 

Please note that, due to the volume of applications received, proposals from advanced (i.e., post-PhD-prelim) graduate students with demonstrated research travel needs are preferred. 

Applicants who have an “incomplete” on their record at the time of application are not eligible.

Application for CAS Graduate Research Fellowship:

Students should e-mail the following to the Center for Austrian Studies (casahy@umn.edu) by 4:30 p.m. on March 8th, 2024 with the subject line: “2024 CAS Graduate Research Fellowship”

I. Combined PDF that includes: 

A two-page proposal describing the scholarly work or research and/or travel to be undertaken during the summer, and how this work directly relates to the applicant’s progress towards degree completion. 

A statement of academic progress, listing:

1. Year of entrance into the graduate program

2. Dates proposed or completed PhD prelims; dates of proposed or completed prospectus meeting; and dates of proposed PhD defense

3. (If applicable) any remaining degree requirements to be completed, with a schedule for completion (e.g., language certifications)

4. Names of other summer award competitions, to which you are currently applying; as summer funding is limited, it is expected that applicants to CAS summer fellowships will also apply to similar funding in our partner centers (e.g., CGESCRIDGSPremodern Studies, etc.)

Selection Process

A faculty committee will evaluate applications and submit its recommendations to the CAS director. Notification of awards will be sent in April 2024.

Voices of Vienna Scholarship

The Voices of Vienna scholarship was established by Kathryn and Wilbur Keefer, in honor of the late William Wright, Professor Emeritus of History and founding director of the Center for Austrian Studies (1978). The scholarship is administered by the School of Music and the Center for Austrian Studies in alternating years. For the competition in 2024, the scholarship will be awarded by the Center for Austrian Studies to an undergraduate senior or graduate student at the University of Minnesota in the social sciences or humanities, who proposes to do research in Austria or another country in Central Europe with ties to the former Habsburg Empire.

Eligibility

Applicants should be fully matriculated UMN undergraduate or graduate students (pre- or post-prelims) who specialize in or intend to explore specialization in Austrian/Central European Studies. Applications from all disciplines are welcome.

Applicants who have an Incomplete on their record at the time of application are not eligible.

Application for CAS Graduate Fellowship:

Students should e-mail the following to the Center for Austrian Studies (casahy@umn.eduby 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 8th, 2024 with the subject line: “2024 Voices of Vienna Scholarship:"

1. A personal statement (max. 3 pages) outlining goals and objectives of study and how this experience will enhance the applicant's long-term professional aspirations.

2. Unofficial Transcript

3. If not listed on applicant’s transcript: evidence of having successfully completed at least one semester of German or other language in the area in which the applicant proposes to studyOne letter of recommendation from a current UMN faculty member
