Katerina Korola awarded Fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study and the eikones Center for the Theory and History of the Image
Congratulations to Dr. Katerina Korola, Assistant Professor in the Department of German, Nordic, Slavic, and Dutch, who has been awarded a Mellon Fellowship for Assistant Professors from the Institute for Advanced Study, as well as a NOMIS Fellowship from the eikones Center for the Theory and History of the Image in Basel.
Established in 1930, the Institute for Advanced Study is one of the world’s leading centers for innovative research across the sciences and humanities. Each year, the institute awards three Mellon Fellowships to assistant professors engaged in historical inquiry. While in residence at the IAS during Fall 2024, Professor Korola will complete her book-in-progress, Picturing the Air: Photography and the Industrial Atmosphere, which tells the history of air pollution as a photographic problem. A part of this project, published in Representations as “The Air of Objectivity: Albert Renger-Patzsch and the Photography of Industry,” received the Emerging Scholars Publication Prize from the Historians of German, Scandinavian, and Central European Art.
Professor Korola will then spend the Winter semester at the eikones Center for the Theory and History of the Image, a research institute dedicated to the study of images across historical, geographic, and disciplinary boundaries. As a fellow at eikones, she will begin work on her second book project, A Heliotropic Medium: Botanical Photography in an Age of Ecological Crisis, which probes the intertwined histories of photography, botany, and energy from the nineteenth century to the present. During this time, she will also organize an international symposium that brings together artists and scholars working on the “chemical histories of photography."
