2018 Children of Incarcerated Caregivers Paid Internship
Children of Incarcerated Caregivers (CIC) is seeking one or two student interns for part time, paid summer positions. Applicants must be current University of Minnesota students who will be enrolled in a graduate or professional program at the University of Minnesota in the fall of 2018.
Founded in 2014, CIC is a Minneapolis-based non-profit dedicated to researching and advocating for policies and programs that improve the lives of children whose caregivers are incarcerated or facing incarceration or detention. Depending on experience and interest, interns may work on the following initiatives.
Impact of Immigration Detention Through an examination of current laws, policies, published studies and literature, and community resources and needs, interns will advise CIC on how to advocate for the best interests of children whose parents have been detained in connection with immigration proceedings.
Family Visits for Children Through research on existing programs, interns will support CIC’s initiative to advocate for the expansion of programs that help children stay connected with their incarcerated parents.
Public Awareness Interns will assist with events and trainings that inform community members about the impact of parental incarceration and/or detention on children and the need for programs that serve the best interests of the children. Interns will also connect with other organizations with similar missions and will help create awareness of existing resources for families affected by incarceration and/or detention.
University of Minnesota interns will work with one intern from Macalester College, and will have opportunities for collaboration with two student interns from the 2017 summer program. The team will work under the auspices of the University of Minnesota’s Human Rights Program. Interns will work remotely, but have office space when needed at the Human Rights Program. Team members will meet twice each week as a group and will receive weekly feedback and direction from University of Minnesota faculty, Macalester faculty, as well as CIC board members with experience in criminal justice and human rights issues.
Qualifications: Students with knowledge of immigration or criminal law, human rights, public policy, public health, psychology, sociology, or other programs related to the issues affecting children of incarcerated or detained caregivers will be considered. Candidates must have a demonstrated academic interest or work experience in immigration or criminal law, incarceration, and/or the wellbeing of children.
Application deadline: March 30, 2018. Applicants should email their résumé and cover letter to Rochelle Hammer (hamm0229@umn.edu). Please put “CIC Fellowship Application” in the subject line of the email.
Commitment: 20 hours per week, May 29 – August 31, 2018. Students must be available for a public presentation at the Weisman Art Museum on September 5.
Stipend: Graduate/professional students will earn a stipend of $3,500.00 for the summer internship.
Opportunity for work during academic year: Depending on summer work and CIC needs, summer interns may be invited to continue to intern part-time with CIC during the 2019-19 academic year.
