Dr. Kim made his debut with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra at age 15. He holds a bachelor of music with distinction in piano performance from the University of Calgary, and both a master of music and a doctor of musical arts in piano performance from The Juilliard School, where he studied under Herbert Stessin.

An accomplished recitalist and chamber musician, Dr. Kim has appeared as a concerto soloist with symphonies all over the world, from the Boston Pops to the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. As a recitalist he has performed in cities throughout Canada, the United States, United Kingdom, South America, and Asia, and has been a featured artist at nine summer festivals.

Dr. Kim is also a veteran academic administrator with a strong record of success in student recruitment, fundraising, and community engagement. He comes to the University of Minnesota from Manitoba, Canada, where he has served as dean and professor at the Brandon University School of Music since 2008, and acting associate vice-president (external) since 2014. Prior to that he was chair of the keyboard department and faculty associate to the president at Lawrence University in Wisconsin.
