Michael Kim made his debut with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra at age 15. He holds a bachelor of music with distinction in piano performance from the University of Calgary, and both a master of music and a doctor of musical arts in piano performance from The Juilliard School, where he studied under Herbert Stessin.

An accomplished recitalist and chamber musician, Dr. Kim has appeared as a concerto soloist with symphonies all over the world, from the Boston Pops to the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. As a recitalist, he has performed in cities throughout Canada, the United States, United Kingdom, South America, and Asia, and has been a featured artist at nine summer festivals.

Dr. Kim is also a veteran academic administrator with a strong record of success in student recruitment, fundraising, and community engagement. He came to the University of Minnesota in 2015 from Brandon University School of Music, where he served as dean and professor and acting associate vice-president (external). Prior to that he was chair of the keyboard department and faculty associate to the president at Lawrence University in Wisconsin.
