Master of Music (MM)

With program emphases in choral, orchestral, and wind ensemble/band conducting, this degree is designed to guide the student toward the development of fluency in the language of conductorial gesture and to encourage the establishment of a unique artistic identity while fostering the understanding of the diverse roles of the conductor. It is recommended that students spend two academic years in the completion of this program.

Apply and audition

For your MM, you will be expected to meet one of the following sets of requirements:

Choral Conducting Emphasis:

  • 15 credits of choral conducting coursework, including score study, choral literature, and performance project
  • 9 credits of music theory, musicology/ethnomusicology, and creative studies and media
  • 6 elective credits
  • Participation in a school of music chorus each semester
  • Final oral examination

Orchestral Conducting Emphasis:

  • 15 credits of orchestral conducting coursework, including performance project
  • 3 credits of orchestration
  • 6 credits of music theory, musicology/ethnomusicology, and creative studies and media
  • 3 credits of music elective 
  • Final oral examination

Wind Conducting Emphasis:

  • 11 credits of wind conducting coursework, including performance project
  • 9 credits of music theory, musicology/ethnomusicology, and creative studies and media
  • 12 elective credits
  • Final oral examination
