National Transfer Student Week!

October 21st - 25th has been named National Transfer Student Week by the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students. The purpose of this week is to celebrate all that transfer students bring to our campus and to raise awareness about who our transfer students are. To celebrate this week the Office of Undergraduate Education has created a calendar of events (including free coffee and donuts!) and is also inviting current transfer students, staff, and faculty who were transfer students to share their transfer student stories. You can find transfer week events and submit your transfer story on the U of M’s National Transfer Student Week website. Transfer students who attend transfer week events or submit a transfer story will be eligible to win a U of M sweatshirt!

Countdown to Registration - 3 Weeks Out

Another week closer to being able to register for the Fall semester! This week, we recommend looking into any holds you may have on your record. Holds can be viewed in MyU. Generally, holds can be related to academics, finances, or other issues. Appointments are currently available to meet with a Psych Advisor (please note that psychology generally does not use holds, so if you have a hold, we may not be your first stop!). We recommend scheduling sooner rather than later if you would like to meet with Psych Advising because our office can become very busy once registration starts!

Career Spotlight

Career Spotlight - Vocational Counseling

Majoring or minoring in Psychology can pave the way for careers across various industries. This week, we are highlighting a career in Vocational Counseling. A vocational counselor is an individual who provides career advice to their clients based on their interests, skills, and needs. They often work with young adults just starting in their careers but also work with older adults who may be looking to shake things up. Additionally, they may hold group workshops and administer aptitude tests. Think of them as a career matchmaker! People in this occupation are often good listeners, dedicated, and creative. They need to be able to listen to what their clients want, problem-solve to find the best solution for them and be willing to spend time researching different careers. Interests in teaching, talking, and helping others may mean this is the career for you. A psychology B.A. offers a solid foundation for this career, emphasizing communication skills, and understanding diverse needs, and theories relevant to job suitability. After obtaining a Bachelor's degree, a Master's degree is often required for this position. Some types of Master's degrees that may complement this role may be an M.A. in counseling or industrial/organizational psychology.  To learn more about this career, visit our office for in-person career resources, or set up a meeting with us to discuss your post-grad plans and goals!

A global pandemic, civil uprising, police-based violence, and economic and climate instability impact all of us. The ability to sustain oneself and better understand the ”why” of those around us is of critical importance to bridge gaps of connection and build workplace relationships to have a healthy and productive organizational culture. Leaders and managers who understand the mental, emotional, and physical symptoms that indicate a lack of focus can create work environments that better engage and support employees. This course supports leaders and managers in understanding the science of stress responses in themselves and their employees to create trauma-informed workplaces.

Note: This course does not count within the Psychology major or minor program requirements.
