Graduate Minor in American Studies

With a graduate minor in American studies, you will pursue broad training in analyzing the development of cultural and historical processes that shaped the nation and its diverse cultures, as well as analyzing contemporary practices. You will learn how to best integrate American studies theory into your existing work, as well as how to expand your research to include contemporary and historical American studies methodologies.

Our minor pairs well with other graduate programs, such as cultural studies and comparative literature, feminist studies, geography, history, public health, and many others.

MA Minor

For a master’s minor, we expect you to choose courses consistent with or complementary to your major. You should complete AMST 8201: Historical Foundations of American Studies, or AMST 8202: Theoretical Foundations and Current Practice in American Studies, and two more courses in American studies.

Once you have planned out your path for a master's graduate minor, our director of graduate studies must approve your degree plan.

PhD Minor

For the doctoral minor, you must complete at least 12 credits of courses consistent with or complementary to your major, including four 5xxx or 8xxx courses in American studies. One of your graduate-level American studies courses must be AMST 8201: Historical Foundations of American Studies, or AMST 8202: Theoretical Foundations and Current Practice in American Studies.

Once you have planned out your path for a PhD graduate minor, our director of graduate studies must approve your degree plan.
