All students admitted to the PhD program are offered a six-year funding package, contingent on satisfactory progress toward degree. The funding package provides payment of tuition up to 14 credits per semester, partial payment of the health insurance premium, and a stipend. You can read more on funding opportunities.

The University of Minnesota encourages a diverse representation of perspectives and provides specific funding opportunities for underrepresented groups. Our students have received many competitive university and national fellowships. Current and prospective students are encouraged to explore the funding opportunities listed by the Graduate School. Prospective students should indicate their interest in internal recruitment fellowships in their applications; a few of our most common are listed below:

Diversity of Views and Experiences Fellowships

The Diversity of Views and Experiences (DOVE) Fellowship Program seeks to assist graduate research programs to promote a diversity of views, experiences, and ideas in the pursuit of research, scholarship, and creative excellence. This is promoted through the recruitment and support of academically excellent students who are looking to advance equity, diversity, and social justice through scholarly, volunteer, or community activism experiences that required a long-term commitment. The DOVE fellowship is a $25,000 stipend, academic year tuition at the general graduate rate for up to 14 credits per semester, and subsidized health insurance through the Graduate Assistant Health Plan for up to one calendar year. DOVE Fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in the First Year Institute (FYI)

Students who wish to be nominated must contact the Director of Graduate Studies in advance.

Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change Fellowships

The Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change (ICGC) offers fellowships that provide financial support for graduate students at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Nominees should have backgrounds and interests that identify them as outstanding students who are clearly committed to the interdisciplinary study of the Global South in the context of global change. We encourage nominations of exceptionally capable students—especially, but not only, from the Global South and groups traditionally underrepresented in graduate education. Prospective students are nominated by their chosen graduate program. Students who wish to be nominated must contact the Director of Graduate Studies in advance.
