Hindi/Urdu students are engaged in various extra-curricular activities, including  attending musical recitals, film nights, and the Hindi/Urdu Conversation Club. The student club is designed to help Hindi/Urdu learners improve their skills through informal meetings and discussions on varied topics about Hindi- and Urdu-speaking countries. The club, which is composed of Hindi/Urdu students, meets weekly to improve their oral and aural skills. Due to the number of different topics discussed at the meetings, participants are exposed to various cultural aspects of Hindi/Urdu speaking countries.

The Hindi/Urdu Conversation Club holds various cultural programs in partnership with the Hindi/Urdu Program and ALL. As a part of outreach activities in the past two years, the club has co-sponsored Bollywood Film Night and the Hindi/Urdu poetry recital competition.

Hindi/Urdu Tutoring

Hindi/Urdu tutors are available to students who are enrolled in beginning or intermediate Hindi/Urdu classes and need extra help outside of class. The tutors are students who have acquired an advanced proficiency in the target language and are enrolled in the Hindi/Urdu teaching tutorial. This is a free service; each tutor is paired up with a tutee and tutoring sessions are custom-designed for a tutee’s specific needs.

Miscellaneous Opportunities

  • Many Hindi/Urdu students are members of the Indian Student Association, Bharat, or the Pakistani Student Association. These students are actively involved in each organization's cultural events and serve as intermediaries between themselves and other Hindi/Urdu students.
  • Students can apply for various fellowships, such as FLAS, Boren, CLS, AIIS, and AIPS to continue to study Hindi/Urdu through an immersion program in India. This is a wonderful opportunity to have a firsthand experience of the culture and exposure to the various aspects of the target country. See the Hindi/Urdu Resources page for more information.
  • The Learning Abroad Center at U of M offers several programs in India.
