Placement

The following students must take a placement test before registering for Korean classes:

  • Transfer students who have taken Korean at other institutions and wish to continue their Korean language at the University of Minnesota
  • Students who have not taken the prerequisite for a Korean class beyond first semester but who wish to test in
  • Students who completed their last Korean course more than 4 semesters ago
  • Students returning from study-abroad in Korea who wish to continue their Korean studies at the U of M, or who wish to count their study-abroad Korean course as an elective toward the minor

The placement test includes a reading, writing, and an oral interview.

Proficiency Exams

Upon completion of the intermediate level, students may choose to take the Korean Language Proficiency Exam (LPE). Completion of the LPE fulfills the CLA Second Language requirement and is noted on students' transcripts. The LPE examines students in the skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It is administered by the CLA Language Testing Program, located at Jones Hall; the oral component is taken within the Korean program.

Korean LPEs are offered on fixed dates at the end of fall semester and at the end of spring semester. To register for an LPE, visit the Language Testing Program.
