In our program, you will develop linguistic proficiency while engaging with francophone culture, film, literature, and linguistics, and you will develop tools to think critically, communicate confidently, and engage with the world. Students who complete a French major or minor are able to:
- Communicate clearly and creatively in French across a range of topics and modalities (speaking, reading, listening, writing)
- Analyze the rich diversity of languages, ideas, and cultural production (film, literature, art, media) of the French-speaking world to understand their impact on past and present thinking.
- Evaluate diverse Francophone perspectives on globalization, identity, language, human rights, and other pressing global issues
- Reflect on cultural and linguistic differences and adapt to new perspectives with empathy and openness
- Research ideas and evaluate cultural production using discipline-specific practices (from literary and philosophical theory to linguistic and sociocultural analysis)
- Engage meaningfully with the French-speaking world through study abroad, internships, service learning, or community engagement
- Apply linguistic, cultural, and analytical skills and knowledge to careers in education, business, health, the arts, law, public service, and beyond
