Reflections from Our Alumni
We spoke with some of our former students who worked as part of the Human Rights Program. They share what they have done after graduation and how the program shaped their worldviews and career paths.
In celebration of the Human Rights Program's 20th anniversary, Berglind Halldorsdottir Birkland recently shared with us her reflections on her time with the HRP and the impact it had on her career path.
"My experience and networking in the HRP is invaluable," says Meizani Irmadhiany. "It shaped not only my professional principles and approaches but has also led to lifelong relationships."
Human Rights Program alumnus Cameron Mailhot is pursuing a PhD, which is a dream he has had from a young age, however, his experience in HRP "helped [him] to develop a broader understanding of the purpose and value of [his] chosen career path."
"A UMN Human Rights Program scholarship...provided opportunities that changed the way I saw the world, its challenges, and possibilities, and influenced the direction of my life," says alumnus Ted Meinhover.
Isabella Nascimento credits work she did with the Human Rights Program to launch her career in advocating for human rights as an attorney.
"Working with the HRP was really my first step into the world of academia," says alumna Whitney Taylor. "I met professors who encouraged me to pursue graduate studies and mentored me from my time at the U to the present day."
