Vanessa Anyanso, a counseling psychology graduate student at the University of Minnesota, was interviewed by the StarTribune in an article titled “‘I'm in danger just living in America’: For black community, Floyd's death brings more grief and trauma.” Anyanso discusses how she personally has been affected by the death of George Floyd. She decided on “run supplies for the revolution”, to support protesters and organizations throughout Minneapolis.

Borgida Mentioned in an Article About Police Implicit Bias Training

Eugene Borgida, PhD, Professor of Psychology & Law at the University of Minnesota was mentioned in a Popular Science online article titled “Can implicit bias training help cops overcome racism?” He comments that psychological science on implicit bias training suggests forcing police officers to attend implicit bias training may make participants defensive and untrusting. Mandatory vs. voluntary participation may cause the training program to be less effective.

Emerita Professor Gloria Leon, PhD, knows about the effects on human performance in isolated and confined extreme (ICE) environments, which are comparable to experiences of quarantine and social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Leon shared some of the “lessons learned” from her research on military personnel in the Arctic and Antarctic.

On the Day of George Floyd's Memorial Service

Today from 1:00-3:00 pm in Minneapolis was the first of several memorial services that will be held for George Floyd. I want to encourage each of you to remember and honor Mr. Floyd and to contemplate the long history of racist policing that led up to this murder. The Department of Psychology supports and stands in total solidarity with our students, faculty, staff, and others who are expressing collective grief and demanding accountability. We thank them for their integrity and courage as we all work to imagine and create a better world.

Department of Psychology Takes Time to Discuss the Police Killing of George Floyd

Monday, June 1st, 2020 the Department of Psychology at the University of Minnesota hosted a Town Hall for students, faculty, and staff. The meeting was facilitated by Rich Lee, Associate Chair for Research, and provided a safe place for individuals to share their feelings and experiences around the murder of George Floyd by police, the protests, and civil unrest and violence that has since followed. People spoke about their worries and fears as racialized minorities in our community, the violence in the streets amidst the peaceful protests, and concerns and experiences with police.

Undergraduate Seniors are Awarded the Borine Award for Spring 2020

All students graduating with a psychology major complete a capstone project during their senior year. This project demonstrates expertise in an area of psychological research. The Sharon Borine Award for Top Capstone was established to recognize the best of these projects every semester; Psychology Honor Students are nominated yearly for the top prize. Capstone Student projects are reviewed by section leaders, the course instructor, and a group of faculty reviewers in the Department of Psychology to select and rank the recipients. Honors students are nominated by their faculty mentor and submissions are evaluated and ranked by a faculty panel. Congratulations to the Spring 2020 recipients: Claudia Herbert, Samantha Gardow, Samuel Lee, and Rachel Jensen!

Helping students cope with stress during COVID-19

Patricia Frazier’s, PhD, research could not be more timely. This spring, Frazier, in collaboration with fellow counseling psychologists (and former PhD students!) Drs. Liza Meredith (UMN - Twin Cities) and Viann Nguyen-Feng (UM - Duluth), adapted a previously developed online intervention (Frazier et al., 2015; Hintz, Frazier, & Meredith, 2015; Meredith & Frazier, 2019; Nguyen-Feng et al., 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019) to evaluate its effectiveness in helping students cope with stress in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Teenagers and Sheltering-in-Place: Special Challenges

Monica Luciana, PhD, is concerned that measures like the COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders present unique challenges for adolescents. In her research, Luciana considers the scientific underpinnings of why adolescents engage in more risky behavior than either children or adults.  Currently, she is exploring why adolescents are so positively motivated to seek rewards, including a particularly potent source of reward for adolescents: the presence of peers.
