Welcome New Staff Member: Laura Pester
Laura Pester, she/they, is our new Undergraduate Student Services Admin. We asked them some questions about her new role.
How do you support the department?
I am the Psychology Undergraduate Student Services Engagement Specialist and I will primarily lead management for front desk operations and assist with communications and student services for psychology undergraduates.
What are your goals for the next few months/years?
My goals for the next few months within this role are to get acclimated to the office environment, as well as learn what amazing and never-ending resources are available on the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus! My goal for the next few years is to gain an increased amount of insight into what it's like to hold an advisor role, as well as contribute to creating an inclusive, welcoming, and safe environment for all students, faculty, and staff.
What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job?
I wish people knew that there are so many resources to acknowledge and share! Not only do we have resources within the psychology department, but there are SO many helpful tips and tricks for students and staff alike all over campus and the metro area. Learning about all the support and resources the U has to offer is one of the many things I enjoy doing within my role.
What’s one thing that surprised you about your current role?
I was surprised at the large number of students that are interested in learning about psychology and the research opportunities psychology brings! It is amazing to see so many students engaging in psychology-related material in and out of the classrooms. Furthering your own knowledge and engaging in research opportunities with faculty interested in the same material can be so rewarding and fulfilling, and it's incredible to see so many students using the resources provided for them.
What, if anything, are you currently binge-watching? Or reading?
I am currently binge-watching season 3 of Love is Blind. The chaos that is reality TV has given me so much joy.
