Nicola Grissom Interviewed by The Transmitter on Sex Differences

Headshot of Dr. Nicola Grissom

Nicola Grissom was interviewed in The Transmitter’s article “Accounting for a mosaic of sex differences: Q&A with Nicola Grissom.”

In this interview, Grissom explains that her colleagues who study cognition and behavior in people and animals have shown discomfort “about how to report sex differences in their studies without reinforcing binary gender roles—and without specializing in research on sex differences themselves.” She wants people to be able to “identify where sex does or does not play a role,” and recognize that there could be multiple reasons why a sex difference exists,  there are several different ways for sex to influence the brain, such as through chromosomes versus hormones. How correlated specific sex difference findings are can hint at which mechanisms drive differences across sexes and can be a clue for future research.

Nicola Grissom, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Psychology, and director of the NeuroGOAL Lab at the University of Minnesota.
