Alum Max Bai Creates the Card Game “Publish or Perish” Highlighting what People Experience in Academic Life

Max Bai

Shown in a recent Nature article, former social psychology graduate, Max Bai, developed a card game called “Publish or Perish” which is a game that may hit close to home for “researchers trying to navigate the often-labyrinthine and cut-throat institution of academia.” Bai says “the game aims to poke fun at the “absurdity” of what it takes to build a successful scientific career” as the player with the highest number of citations in the game wins. Overall, the game aims to humor overworked graduate students and works as a medium to socialize “using the collective trauma people experience in academic life.”

Max Bai, PhD, graduated 2021 at the Department of Psychology at the University of Minnesota. Bai was advised by Gene Borgida and Christopher Federico.
