ICD Mentors Future Scholars in Developmental Science

The Tri-Psychology Programs, which include Educational Psychology, the Institute of Child Development (ICD), and Psychology, helped fund a new initiative called the Young Scientists Program. Graduate students and postdoctoral mentors from these programs partnered with five high school students interested in developmental psychology. Additionally, mentors taught developmental science curriculum at Avalon Charter School and Ascension Catholic Academy.

Despite challenges posed by the pandemic, mentees were able to present their work at the bi-annual meeting of the Society for Research in Child Development. The session, titled “Building Pipelines: Engaging Youth in Science,” allowed for a unique opportunity for high school students to present their research. The full session can be watched online. Both mentors and mentees received stipends for their work thanks to the Tri-Psych award and Ruth Winifred Howard Award.
