Kate Carosella: An Analytical Approach to Public Health

Woman with wavy auburn hair and light skin, smiling

A summer internship gave graduate student Kate Carosella a chance to apply data analytics to public health work and provided examples of a possible career path and an ideal work environment.

What were your main job responsibilities? Describe the projects you worked on.

I worked to analyze and interpret data pertaining to the efficacy of interventions aimed at reducing the severity of patients' mental health concerns. I also conducted environmental scans of existing programs and calculated the fiscal impact of proposed changes. I was able to use my data analytics and presentation skills in new ways in this role. I learned a great deal about health policy and working with government entities.

How did you find your internship? What tips do you have for others seeking similar opportunities?

I found this internship on LinkedIn. I knew that I was interested in public health and public policy and searched for related graduate internships. I did not use my network to obtain this particular role, however, I do think that speaking with former academics who had transitioned to industry broadly inspired me to apply and trust that the process would work out.

What are your top takeaways from your internship experience? How has it helped inform your future plans?

I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. I learned a lot about values and practices that I hope to find in future employment positions. Additionally, this role confirmed that working in a public service field would not only be feasible but would also fulfill my desire to have a broader impact on people. I am hopeful to pursue a career in this field, or a similar one, in the future.
