Psychology Advising Announcements
1. Fall Registration Starts on Thursday, April 11th
Registration for Fall courses begins on Thursday, April 11th. If you are interested in meeting with us for planning for courses, please submit an appointment request as soon as possible! We can book up to two weeks out during registration.
2. Research in Psychology Fair

Psychology undergraduate students, stop by the 6th Floor of Elliott Hall anytime between 1:00- 3:00 pm on Thursday, April 11th to learn about psychology research opportunities! Representatives from psychology research labs, UROP, and Psychology Advising will be available to answer your questions. This event is specifically recommended for Psychology BS majors planning to complete the capstone during the 2019-20 academic year, but all students interested in learning more about psychology research opportunities are welcome.

3. Join Psi Chi / Psych Club for Gap Year Panel

Join the Psychology Club for our Gap Year Panel. This interactive event will allow students to ask questions to our panel of seven experienced graduates from various disciplines who have navigated their time after graduation. What does a gap year look like? What opportunities can I take advantage of? Come with questions and feel free to write them anonymously on provided post-its! Snacks will be provided. We hope to see you all there!
4. IOPC: HR Guest Speaker Event

She has been in the healthcare industry for the past 24 years and has experience in most facets of HR. Courses of Interest
5. PSY 4960: Current Issues in Diversity Science
This is an advanced topics course for undergraduate students interested in research, theory, history, and practice related to psychological perspectives in Diversity Science. Diversity Science broadly pertains to understanding causes, consequences, and correlates of human group-based variations, in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, and the like. Students will learn how to adopt a scientific, analytic perspective on current issues and debates related to diversity within both academic research and popular culture. This course will consist of lecture, discussion, and a substantial amount of hands-on learning through the use and analysis of relevant research data. Prior or concurrent enrollment in PSY 3301: Introduction to Cultural Psychology is suggested but not required. Completion of PSY 3801 and PSY 3001W strongly recommended but not required.

6. National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day: Rapid HIV Testing

Location: Coffman Memorial Union Room 304 (with additional information/trivia at a table near bookstore)
In recognition of National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, there will be a free rapid HIV testing event held on campus. The event is sponsored by the Gender and Sexuality Center for Queer and Trans Life, SHADE, Boynton Health, and Youth and Aids Project (who will be conducting the rapid HIV testing). There will also be HIV/AIDS trivia with a chance to win prizes! Testing and trivia are open to the public, regardless of age. You can contact gsc@umn.edu with any questions.
7. Health Professional School Expo

The Health Professional School Expo will bring health professional schools from around the country to campus to network with students. Whether you're a freshman or a senior, it can be great experience to get face to face with an admissions representative, ask questions about the program and the profession, and share a bit about yourself. A full listing of schools and programs will be available in the Health Professional School Expo mobile guide, in the U Minnesota app, which will go live next week. The guide will also include some questions to help students prepare for the event, no matter where they are at in the exploration or preparation process. The HPSE is sponsored by the UMN Pre-Health Student Resource Center and the Interprofessional Pre-Health Students organization. 9. University Transfer Student Board Presents APAS and Transfer Credit Information Session

Our ASR colleagues and TES specialist will be on hand to provide students with a general overview of how to access and read their APAS report and how the transfer credit review process works at the U of M (of course, for all specific questions regarding degree requirements we will be sure to have students contact their Academic Advisor). 12. Research Assistant Position Available in Adolescent Depression MRI Studies
Dr. Karina Quevedo is currently looking is looking for motivated Psychology undergraduates to come to acquire neuroimaging research experience in her lab (looking to take credit 4993/UROP/volunteer). This opportunity is geared towards students who can begin working as soon as possible for at least 1.5-2 full years. The Health and Emotions in Adolescents: Research and Trajectories (HEART) Lab is a neuroimaging lab conducting several studies to better understand adolescent depression, suicidality, and self-harm. The HEART Lab focuses on the brain function of adolescents – with and without depression – while they complete fMRI tasks designed to examine emotion regulation and cognition. Our real-time MRI “Train Your Brain” research study that we are currently conducting is particularly exciting because there are opportunities to see how the brain works in vivo! This is an excellent opportunity for students looking to present a poster or to write a UROP project or research credit. Required skills include basic computer skills. Preferred skills include computer knowledge in MATLAB, SPSS, and Photoshop. The time commitment for this position is about 5-12 hours/week. 13. Social Interaction Lab
We are seeking enthusiastic, conscientious, and detail-oriented students to work in Dr. Jeff Simpson’s Social Interaction Lab in the Summer of 2019. We will be collecting data (e. g., running participants) from parents and their child (age 3-5) on a project about differences in parenting behaviors. Because we have many community participants, we have to be flexible in scheduling the lab sessions. That means sometimes working on nights or weekends, and the schedule will change from week to week (but sessions are scheduled around your availability). Successful applicants will have multiple chunks of 3+ hours available per week. Prospective research assistants should be able to commit approximately 9 hours of work per week over the summer. 15. University of Minnesota School of Dentistry Open House

The Office of Admissions and Diversity is holding the 2nd Annual School of Dentistry Open House for high school and college students on Saturday, June 15, 2019. Programming for high school students will be from 9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and college students will attend in the afternoon from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. Activities for both groups include hands-on activities, information sessions, and an opportunity to connect with current students, faculty and staff in our dental hygiene (BSDH), dental therapy (BSDH/MDT), and dentistry (DDS) programs. 16. St. Cloud State University - Now Accepting Applications
SCSU is now accepting applications for their Rehabilitation Counseling (M.S.) and Rehabilitation and Addiction Counseling (M.S.) programs in the Department of Community Psychology, Counseling and Family Therapy. These programs help you develop the professional understanding, knowledge, attitude, and skills necessary to assist individuals and groups with disabilities in achieving their maximum level of independence and functioning. 17. Work at the CLA Commencement Ceremony! Paid Opportunity
Help us celebrate our CLA graduates! Volunteers are still needed for our commencement ceremonies being held at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 19 at the 3M Arena at Mariucci. We are expecting over 1,000 students for each ceremony and need your help. There are three different options for time:
Group 1 (Both Ceremonies) 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (if you work the entire day, lunch will be provided)
Group 2 (First Ceremony) 8:15 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Group 3 (Second Ceremony) 1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

18. The Recovery Village® Health Care Scholarship
The Recovery Village® is dedicated to maintaining exceptional service at our alcohol and drug rehab facilities while providing unique opportunities for education and personal development. As part of this commitment, The Recovery Village® is offering a $1,000 scholarship to students pursuing a medical-related course of study. To enter to win a $1,000 scholarship, simply submit a short essay (no more than 500 words) describing why you are passionate about substance use disorder and mental health treatment. Essays can be in the form of a personal narrative with a medical perspective or focus specifically on clinical experience. A $1,000 award will be given to a student pursuing a health-related degree program. Areas of study that will be considered include, but are not limited to, counseling, social work, emergency medicine, pre-med, nursing, psychology (with a focus on addiction counseling or a substance-abuse related field). 20. Psychiatry Department - 2 positions: Recruiter RA & Interviewer RA
The Cognition and Brain (CAB) in Psychopathology Lab is seeking to hire 2 full-time Research Assistants. One RA will be responsible for recruiting participants for multiple studies on psychosis. The recruiter RA will engage in community outreach, establish connections with local organizations, conduct phone screens to review potential participant eligibility, and schedule participants for study visits, as well as maintain our public relations presence with website updates and social media account management (opportunities to conduct additional assessments with participants may be available). The other RA will be responsible for interviewing study participants who are enrolled in the NIMH-funded Psychosis Human Connectome Project. This research is about understanding thinking functions and visual perception in individuals with psychosis and their relatives. The interviewer RA will conduct assessments including DSM structured clinical interviews, neuropsychological, personality, intelligence, and other related assessments, and will be responsible for writing summaries of clinical interviews (with a description of diagnostic impressions) and scoring assessments in preparation for data entry. The RA will review data to assure quality and may prepare data for analysis and publication. For both positions: a bachelor’s degree, or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years, is required and research experience, knowledge, and skills plus outstanding communication and problem-solving skills are preferred.
