Sociology Senior Nahrissa Rush Named 2020 CLA Student Commencement Speaker

Nahrissa Rush

Sociology senior Nahrissa Rush - recipient of the department's Outstanding Undergraduate Research Paper Award and soon-to-be Sociology PhD student at Ohio State - has been named the Undergraduate Student Speaker at the 2020 CLA Virtual Commencement Celebration at 11 a.m. on May 16. We couldn't be more proud.

We in the Department of Sociology, however, are not at all suprised by this news. Over the years, Nahrissa has proven to be an exceptional scholar, TA, classmate, and all-around outstanding citizen. We will miss Nahrissa, of course, but we are more excited to see what amazing things she accomplishes in the years to come.

Below is a brief testimonial from Nahrissa herself who wanted to share her experience here at the U as well as her plans for the future.

"I came to the sociology department in my first semester as a transfer student in January of 2017. I remember my first day of intro lecture just being riveted and filled with certitude that this field was where I belonged. In my time in the department I have had the great privilege of working with and learning from so many incredible faculty including Douglas Hartmann, Joachim Savelsberg, Enid Logan, Joshua Page, Kathy Hull, Teresa Gowan and so many more. I have also been fortunate to engage with our amazing graduate students and have benefited so much from their support and mentorship. I have also forged some incredible bonds with my classmates, especially those in the Senior Honors Proseminar course. The department as a whole has been incredibly supportive with amazing advisors and administrative staff that have helped make sociology feel even more like home to me.

This fall, I will begin the Sociology Ph.D. program at The Ohio State University as a proud alumni of the University of Minnesota. As I wrap up my time here at the U, I still feel that same level of certainty that I am on the right path. I hope to be able to teach, share ideas and inspire others the way that I was inspired here. It only feels right to pass that on. Thank you to everyone who has made this an incredible and absolutely unforgettable experience. I will be forever grateful."
