More about Dr. Lynn Y.S. Lin

Lynn Lin was raised in Taiwan in humble circumstances, but excelled in his studies. His academic qualifications include a BS and MS degree in agricultural economics from National Chung-Hsing University in Taiwan, as well as an MS in statistics from Kansas State University. He moved to Minnesota and completed his PhD in the School of Statistics in 1975, and has since published more than 50 technical papers in the areas of statistics, economics, advertising research, and new product research in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Lin was always dedicated to developing statistical solutions for real-world problems, so after school, he joined the Pillsbury Company and later worked at Booz Allen & Hamilton. He left to form his consulting company in 2002. He is best known for BASES, the new-product sales forecasting methodology he invented, which now has a 65-70% market share worldwide. Dr. Lin is a regular speaker at educational events for quantitative professionals and the author of several books. The School has benefited from his support of summer internships and consulting experiences, which have exposed many of our graduate students to the practical applications of statistics in the real world, and now from his support of undergraduate research experiences.
