Majors & Minors
Why Statistics?
You can do a lot with this major! Statistics majors go on to have successful careers in academia, industry, and government.
Statistics is the science of learning from data, measuring, controlling, and communicating uncertainty. It provides the navigation essential for controlling the course of scientific and societal advances.
Undergraduates who choose a statistics major can pursue a bachelor of arts in statistical practice (BA) or a bachelor of science in statistical science (BS) degree. Both of these degrees are offered through the College of Liberal Arts. Or instead of a major, you may also choose to complete a minor in statistics. Adding a statistics minor to your major is an excellent way to round out your undergraduate education and give you a complementary skill set.
Degree Programs
- BA in Statistical Practice - two subplan options: Applied Statistics and Data Science
- BS in Statistical Science
- Minor in Statistics
Common Questions from Prospective Statistics Majors
Is there an advantage to one degree over the other?
Both the BA and BS degree will provide you with a solid foundation in applied statistics. Because it requires less math and allows students to take a lower-level statistical theory sequence, the BA is generally suggested for those who want to go directly into the workforce, not necessarily as a statistician. The BS degree is designed to help prepare students for graduate study and/or careers as statisticians by requiring additional math courses as well as a higher-level theory of statistics sequence.
Does the BS degree require completion of a fourth semester course in a second language?
The BS degree does not require a second language; however, we do not suggest pursuing the BS degree for this reason alone. Additionally, there may be scenarios where you still need a second language even when completing the BS degree, for example, if you want to complete a dual degree program.
Do I have to be enrolled in the UMN College of Science and Engineering (CSE) to take the BS?
Previously, the BS degree in statistics was offered through CSE. However, as of summer 2017, students can no longer declare this program. All students interested in declaring a major in statistics will complete either the BA in statistical practice or the BS in statistical science, both housed in the College of Liberal Arts.
Can I switch degrees if I want to?
It is possible to switch degrees, but please note that this may require additional time to complete all degree requirements. If you are thinking of switching degree programs, we strongly suggest reaching out to the undergraduate advisor for more information.
