CLA PES Program FAQs

The Office of Admissions identifies and selects students to be placed in the CLA President's Emerging Scholars program based off a holistic review. It is a merit based decision which reflects on your experiences, achievements and an equity mindset. Currently students cannot apply to be in our program, the office of admissions selects participants.

Yes. You were admitted to the University of Minnesota College of Liberal arts through the PES program.

CLA 1005 & 2005: All first year students are required to take a First Year Experience course. These are the two required for PES students because the class content is more identity focused. Passing these exact courses is a graduation requirement.

WRIT 1301: First Year requirement. All first years have to take this writing course to prepare students for university level writing, how to avoid plagiarism and more.

Major Capstone: Done your final year as a wrap up to your undergraduate education. It's a very rigorous and time consuming course.

Liberal Education & Major Requirements: These can be complicated because there are lots of requirements but also tons of classes to chose from! The best way to stay on track for graduation & to find interesting courses for you is to talk to your academic advisor.

PES offeres exclusive scholarship opportunities, community oriented advising, catered class content, higher academic expectations and support that other programs don't offer. Other than a few mandatory events that PES students need to attend in order to receive their full scholarship; PES students have the same housing, courses and experiences as other CLA students.

As a PES student you get priority registration! That means as long as you follow the requirements you can register before almost anyone else on campus.

1. Check the holds on your account. In your MYU, the triangle in the top right corner will tell you if you have any holds and what they are for.
2. Address the holds. If you have a financial hold, contact onestop. If you have a Probation or Advisor hold on your account then schedule an appointment with your academic advisor. 
3. Meet with your academic advisor before priority registration opens at 8am. This is to ensure your schedule is well balanced and your on track for graduation. 

You cannot register until you have addressed all the holds on your account. The earlier you can meet with your advisor, the better!
